AI is in Education: A look into what we’ve learned from our Turnitin Clarity customers

It’s been a year since we released Turnitin Clarity to meet the needs we heard from educators and institutions. Grounded in their input, we developed a transparent composition space where students learn to use AI as a partner in writing and learning, not as a tool that shortcuts it.

Why was Turnitin Clarity built?

Students are using AI in their education. Turnitin Clarity was built to enable responsible use of AI in classrooms and lecture halls around the world. Whether students use a publicly available LLM or a LLM with guardrails matters. Check out this side-by-side video comparing prompts to Turnitin Clarity’s AI assistant vs. a leading, publicly available LLM.

What is Turnitin Clarity?

We agree with educators that there is a time and place for AI use in education. Turnitin Clarity is a tool built for education that empowers instructors to incorporate a safeguarded AI assistant into written assessments. The tool enables educators to define if and how AI should be used in each assignment. Additionally, its AI chat provides guidance and feedback without completing the work for students, helping them incorporate AI responsibly into their work while developing critical thinking skills and preserving learning.

With Turnitin Clarity, educators have a full view of the writing process via the writing playback feature, AI chat summaries & prompt history, writing summary and integrity reports with actionable insights, and access to grading and feedback tools, all within the same integrated Turnitin / LMS environment, including Canvas, Google Classroom, Blackboard, Moodle, and more. This transparency fosters a shared understanding between educators and students, building trust and supporting equitable grading while keeping the focus on real learning.

What have we learned from the more than 800 institutions around the world using Turnitin Clarity?

  • Proof of process is valuable across disciplines: Humanities, including subjects like English, Social Studies, and History, lead in adoption of Clarity. And, we know proof of process is a valuable assessment spanning disciplines. Many STEM courses use Turnitin Clarity for written assignments, and customers around the world have expressed interest in additional features to better support STEM curriculum. The desire for transparency during the learning process is consistent, no matter the subject.
  • Students are hungry for feedback from AI during the writing process: We analyzed tens of thousands of recent prompts in its most recent Learning Integrity Insights Report and found that students were most likely to ask a question in the Turnitin Clarity AI chat when they were in the drafting stage, developing the content of their paper. The most common student request was to ask for feedback on the content of the paper, such as: “Is my paper good?” or “Am I aligned with the rubric?” or “How can I improve my paper?” Requests for feedback about structure, like. paragraph organization and use of transitions, and style, like formatting citations, were the next most common.
  • Customization is required: From the day we released Turnitin Clarity, we heard that instructors want to be able to customize the AI feedback that students are receiving. This is why we released new customizable settings for Turnitin Clarity's AI assistant in May 2026, providing instructors the framework to define what responsible use of AI looks like in practice. The introduction of granular controls allows educators to support diverse learners spanning secondary to graduate levels, and align AI assistance with specific institutional policies and assessment needs.

What new features are coming next for Turnitin Clarity?

We are hearing from educators that they want multipart assignment capabilities, and there is never enough time to give students all of the feedback they deserve. We are exploring those two areas because we believe educators deserve AI and technology specifically built for their needs. We have prioritized listening to and responding accordingly to educators to meet their real-life needs for more than 25 years.
